The Situation
Futures trading is the core of our platform, but for beginners, it can feel overwhelming. To lower the barrier, we introduced a copy trading feature that allows new users to follow experts. At the same time, it provides lead traders with opportunities to earn additional income and expand their influence by sharing their strategies with others.
Backstory
BYEX is a global crypto exchange start-up with over 1 million users worldwide, offering a wide range of trading features and serving a rapidly growing international user base.
My Role

As the only product designer on this project, I led the entire design process from early research to final delivery, including user interviews, prototyping, and testing. I ensured a consistent and seamless experience across both the mobile app and web platform.
Project Scope

-
1 product manager, 4 engineers (App, Web and Java ), 1 QA tester, and 1 product designer
-
The entire design cycle has been from April 2025 to the present.
BYEX Crypto App - Copy Trading
Simple Setup, Confident Investing for Beginners
The Opportunity
The Opportunity: BYEX is aimed to expand its user base by attracting more new crypto users through the copy trading feature
Solutions Quick Peek
The new copy trading feature makes it easier for users to get started with trading by simplifying the overall experience. It offers convenient risk management tools, smarter ways to discover the right traders to follow, and clear access to key performance data, helping users stay in control and make informed investment decisions.

The Impact
Clear MVP goal setting, enhanced cross-functional collaboration, and boosted product team productivity by sharing research insights, testing with the operations team, and leading weekly design syncs.
Because the feature is still under development, I don’t have quantitative results yet. However, throughout the process I was able to strengthen team collaboration and help align on clear MVP goals.
Understand the User Needs & Shape the Product Direction
At the start of the project, the product manager and I conducted user interviews. We spoke with six users and identified copy trading and lead trading scenarios.
I then created end-to-end user journeys to map user actions and pain points at each stage. These journeys allowed us to uncover key needs and service opportunities. At this point, the outcome helps the team move forward with a shared understanding of user needs and a roadmap for identifying high-impact opportunities.
Spot Opportunities via Competitive Analysis
After identifying key needs such as trust, risk control, and transparent performance data, I conducted a competitive analysis to examine how major platforms address these areas, and to uncover the gaps our product could fill.
By observing and analysing these competitors and users interview insights. I found some similar features offered across these apps.
-
Smooth onboarding experiences → Feel less intimidated
-
Transparent & trust data → Make confident decisions
-
Efficient Risk management → Protect investments timely
Set the Scope and Goals for the MVP
As a team player, my goal is always to maximise impact with the resources available. I initiated stakeholder meetings and shared research insights, helping the team align on the scope and goals for our MVP.
Design Challenge – Removing Noise from the Data
In this project, the main challenge was removing noise from the data and surfacing what truly mattered for users. To address this, I initiated stakeholder meetings with the PM and engineers to define priorities and set clear rules for data presentation;
1. On the trader’s performance card, the information was structured into two main groups, with key metrics enlarged and prioritised by reading order.
2. Establish the rules for the ROI and PnL performance chart, defining the X- and Y-axis standards.
Improve the Design through Rapid Prototyping
After creating the hi-fi mockups, I moved on to the validation stage. Using rapid prototypes, I tested with the operations team and iterated on the design for improvements. Below are the two major changes:
Redesigned Role Pages to Support User Growth and Clarity
I redesigned the UI for two key pages, the Follower Center and the Trader Center, to help users clearly identify their role and feel a sense of progression when upgrading to a Trader.
Solving Role-Switching Limitation in MVP
Due to MVP constraints, users couldn’t switch roles. This meant they could only view performance data based on their current identity. To address this, I redesigned the user flow so that users could review their past performance without needing to cancel their current role. This allows them to evaluate historical results and optimise their investment strategies.
Clear Information Presentation
A clear visual hierarchy highlights essential data, supported by dynamic charts to help users make investment decisions efficiently.
Intuitive Transaction Process
Straightforward instructions and optimised form-filling processes enable users to complete transactions with clarity and confidence.
Customisable Notification Setting
Personalised notification settings allow busy users to monitor their investments in a timely and convenient manner.
Consistent Brand Identity
The app design system retains the website’s visual language to reinforce familiarity and strengthen user trust in the brand.
Design Goal
Leveraging insights from the research above, my goal was to design an investment app that is clear, intuitive, and easy to operate for investors. Here are the four main design directions that guided the solution:
Meet the Design Goal – Intuitive Transaction Process
On the Fund Subscription Steps, my focus was on fostering confident and efficient investment;
To achieve this, I first introduced a progress bar to reduce user uncertainty about upcoming steps and a multi-select function to eliminate repetitive checkout. Second, for deduction settings, I replaced the dropdown menu with tabs for efficient currency switching and added intuitive +/- buttons next to the text input for error-free value adjustments.

Meet the Design Goal - Flexible Notification Setting
I applied preset percentages of 5%, 15%, and 20% beside the inputs. This allows busy professionals to efficiently manage their settings on mobile.

Meet the Design Goal - Consistent Brand Identity
At this stage, the boards had different opinions on the visuals, debating whether to preserve the established brand identity to maintain trust with existing users, or introduce a trendy dark mode to appeal to younger investors. To bridge these perspectives and move the design forward, I presented three distinct visual styles:
Final Design
A Clear and Trustworthy Experience for New Investors
Clear visual hierarchy and transparent data reduce scam concerns, while intelligent filters streamline the process of finding suitable traders.

A Credible and Empowering Platform for Traders
The design empowers traders to attract followers and grow their influence with confidence by removing friction through a seamless sign-up, building credibility with transparently verified metrics, and providing flexibility with advanced risk-control settings.
Customisable Notifications Improve Monitoring for Busy Users
The new net worth fluctuation setting allows users to set notifications through preset options or customisable values, enabling busy users to efficiently manage and monitor their investments.

Brand Consistency that Builds Trust
The new scalable design system ensures brand recognition and maintainability, significantly reducing development time for updated features by 30%.
Key Takeaways
Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo
In this project, I had the opportunity to work with an excellent third-party UX consultancy that provided initial wireframes. Building upon these initial wireframes, I actively proposed improvements to enhance the overall user experience. However, we occasionally faced disagreements, especially concerning user experience optimisation. In that case, I presented the results of user testing with a low-fidelity prototype, using evidence from both perspectives to persuade them to accept my suggestions. This approach showed my ability to clearly articulate issues and building consensus even when people disagreed.
As the lead designer of this project, I supervised a junior designer, ensuring that the design quality met the standards and deadlines. Supporting designers with less experience not only enhanced my leadership capabilities but also helped me gain new perspectives and challenge my thinking.
